Click Start, then Turn Off Computer.
In the Shutdown Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click
As the system restarts, continuously tap the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, the computer may display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode, and then press
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, then press
F8 until the menu comes up.
Method 2 (use this only if Method 1 does not work)

Click Start, then Run.
In the box, type msconfig and then click OK. This will launch the System Configuration Utility.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab. Check the box for /SAFEBOOT. In the options to the right, Minimal is fine.
Click on Apply, then Close, and in the next box, click
The system will boot in Safe Mode until the /SAFEBOOT box is unchecked, so the next time the computer is started after defragmenting, follow these steps again, and in Step 4 uncheck the box for /SAFEBOOT.
