How to Configure Microsoft Windows Updates - Windows 7

By default, Microsoft Windows is configured to Automatically check for Updates. For dial-up users, it is much better to turn off Automatic Updates and update Microsoft Windows systems monthly, instead of each time you connect to the internet.

To turn off Automatic Updates in Windows 7:

  1. Go to Start, then Control Panel.

  2. Click the System and Security link from the Control Panel window.

  3. Click on Windows Update.

  4. Click Change settings in the left pane.

  5. Under Important Updates, click the arrow to the right and choose Never check for updates (not recommended).

  6. Now you must manually check for, download and install Windows Updates.

To manually update Microsoft Windows 7:

  1. Go to Start, Control Panel, then Windows Updates.

  2. If you have other Microsoft Products, such as Office, click Change settings in the left pane, then under Microsoft Update, select the Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows check box.
