AVG Anti-Virus

A note to Dial-up users: The AVG installation file is huge now, and dial-up users will probably have a tough time with the download. If you can't get it to work, I recommend having a friend with high-speed internet download the offline version for you and put it on a thumb drive or CD. The offline version of AVG can be downloaded here. Unfortunately, all of the antivirus programs are huge now, so there is no subsitute I can recommend.

How to download, install and manually update AVG

AVG Anti-virus is a good program, I've used it for years and have never gotten a virus. AVG Free Edition is available to home users at no cost. To download the free version, go here. (AVG's download pages change often, so these instructions may vary from the actual download site) Click on "Download from download.com", or "download directly from AVG.com" and follow the prompts to download. Save this file to a new file named AVG in your Downloads folder.

If you don't know how to download, save, and install a program, go here.

Make sure you're on the internet, then open the AVG folder in your Downloads folder and double-click on the downloaded file to run it. The installer will connect to the AVG server and download the rest of the necessary files, then the program will install, unless you've downloaded the full file version as decribed above. When the program first runs, follow the prompts for the first run and make sure you update it.

AVG will automatically update every day. Even on dialup, this works ok, but if you want to update manually, see below for instructions.

Tweaks

I do not like the window that comes up when emails are being scanned. If you'd like to disable this, double-click on the AVG Icon in the System Tray in the lower right corner of the screen near the clock. Double click on Email Scanner. On the next screen uncheck the box: Display notification window while email is being scanned, then click on Save Changes.

AVG Manual Update

AVG is configured to obtain updates automatically, however, dialup users may prefer to update manually. This program should be updated at least weekly, daily is best.

To configure AVG for manual update:

  1. Launch AVG by double-clicking on the AVG icon in the System Tray located on lower right-hand corner of your screen, near the clock.

  2. Double click on Update Manager.

  3. Uncheck the box: Start Automatic Updates.

  4. Then go to Tools, Advanced Settings, then "Ignore faulty conditions". Check the box for Update Manager.

  5. AVG must be updated manually now. Do so at least weekly, daily is best.

To manually update AVG:

  1. Right click on the AVG icon in the System Tray located on lower right-hand corner of your screen, near the clock..

  2. Click on Update Now.

  3. A screen will come up, select the Update you want, then click on the Update button.
